Chapter 16
Aaron’s First Time
AARON was pacing up and down in front of the gates, waiting for Bo to get back. They had played rock-paper-scissors to decide who was going to go back to the house to face Candice, and Bo had lost.
He realized he should probably be crouching down out of sight, but he was too agitated to keep still—and excited. Even though he hadn’t actually done the breaking in or stolen anything, just being in the house when he shouldn’t be was a rush. It was the same kind of adrenalin rush he got from barreling down a narrow forest path on his mountain bike at thirty kilometers an hour, leaves whipping his body as he streaked through dense foliage.
The fact that Bo was sharing the adventure with him made it particularly fun—he loved Bo’s easygoing attitude to everything. Even though he’d been anxious to get out the house, he was secretly entertained by Bo’s endless well of ordinarily useless information. Useless to anybody who wasn’t a thief, of course.
He realized his excitement also had a sexual edge to it. All through the evening, he had found it hard not to be distracted by Bo’s physical charms: the way he smelled, slightly musky, maybe a hint of sandalwood in his aftershave, for instance. He thought of how Bo had looked when he had arrived at his house earlier, the way his tanned muscles rippled and bulged when he walked or lifted his arms or just breathed, for that matter. The long, unrestrained shape slithering around inside his shorts when he walked. Even his walk itself, an easygoing, lanky kind of stroll that implied there was never any need to rush.
The gates suddenly started opening, and he dived off the driveway, startled. He had been so lost in thoughts that he had almost forgotten that this was the reason Bo had gone back. Idiot, he chided himself, standing up cautiously and peering through the gates at the unlit road. Just as Bo appeared, the gates started closing again, and they both sprinted through, just making it out before they clanged shut.
“Shit! That was close!” Aaron said, looking at his left hand as if surprised to see it still attached to his arm.
“Uh, yeah. Candice was quite pissed, guess she was hoping the gates would kill us.” He grinned.
They darted back to the car and climbed in. Bo angled off the pavement before switching on the headlights and drove back to the main road.
Aaron finally let out a sigh of relief. “Okay, now I feel safe.”
“I gotta hand it to you, Irish; you sure have interesting friends. I’ve never had this much fun on a second date before. On any date, for that matter. But I’m starving now!”
“Ditto, I could eat Switzerland. Let’s get pizzas on the way.”
Half an hour later, they were sitting at Aaron’s mosaic table outside on the patio, the retractable awning stretched out above them, hiding the view of Earth’s twinkling ceiling. Aaron lit the candles that were in two slightly asymmetrical glass bell jars on the table.
